Our Story

Seventeen years
one yes

Jonathan is from Denver, Colorado, USA and Matthew grew up half a world away in Auckland, New Zealand. We met for the first time freshman year of college, but it took us 6 years to find our way to each other. We began dating in 2010 when Jonathan was working in Boston and Matthew moved to Cambridge for grad school. We moved from Boston to San Francisco in 2014, and have happily lived there ever since. In 2025, after 15 years of partnership, Jonathan finally worked up the courage to pop the question. Matt decided he might as well say yes.

We are excited to get married in Otago - in Matthew’s beautiful home country, among mountains that remind Jonathan of his Colorado home. We cannot wait to welcome you all to this special place.

The Location

The Crown Range

Queenstown and the surrounding Otago region of New Zealand are home to some of New Zealand’s most breathtaking natural scenery. Come dance with us on a high country station on the Crown Range, perched above Arrowtown.

Arrowtown is a beautifully preserved gold-rush village tucked into the mountains beside the Arrow River. With historic cottages, tree-lined streets, excellent restaurants and spectacular alpine scenery, it offers a quieter, more intimate counterpoint to nearby Queenstown—and a fitting gateway to our celebration on the Crown Range.

High country cocktail

High country cocktail

Think garden party elegance with a little high country character: festive, polished, and creative, but not overly formal.

For men, we encourage suits or jackets with trousers, or something with an equivalent level of formality. Traditional tailoring, ties, and bow ties are not required—but those who would like to dress up a little more are welcome to. For women, dresses, jumpsuits, kaftans, tailored separates, and other cocktail-appropriate creations are all perfect.

Most important: wear something that feels like you, can adapt from hot sun to a cool evening, and that you can dance in. Interesting fabrics, colours, patterns, and general unconventionality are welcome if you feel inspired.

High country weather can be unpredictable, and temperatures can vary considerably between day and night. Bring a layer for the evening, and choose shoes that can handle uneven ground.

Above all, be comfortable and have fun with it.

Where to Stay

We encourage you to book soon, as the weekend overlaps with big local events and rooms go fast.

  • Arrowtown: Closest to everything and a charming gold-rush town. The town is suburban, but very adorable. Best place to stay if you want to prioritize a walk or short ride to events.

  • Lake Hayes: Rolling countryside nestled between Coronet Peak and the Remarkables. 5-10 min drive from Arrowtown. You’ll find some amazing houses for rent here – and it is where ours is located. Recommended if you want more space and beautiful scenery.

  • Gibbston Valley: Stunning valley east of Arrowtown and home to some of New Zealand’s best Pinot Noir vineyards. Home to some amazing lodges, vineyard stays, and houses for rent. 15 min drive from Arrowtown.

  • Queenstown: Father afield, with more hotels, apartments, and nightlife. Without traffic it is a 25 min drive from Arrowtown, but during rush hour traffic can be congested on the main road out of Queenstown, and the drive can take up to an hour.

We highly recommend staying east of Queenstown since all wedding events are in and around Arrowtown. See links below for recommended houses and hotels. Let us know if you have trouble finding accommodation - we’re happy to help guide you to suitable spots!

Things to do

Exploring Otago

Central Otago has tons to do in the summer. For those inclined to the outdoors, there are many tracks (hiking trails), bikes are easy to rent and explore, and you can get out on the water if you're excited about kayaking. It's also a wine region, home to some of New Zealand's best Pinot Noir. And if you have the nose for adventure, there's skydiving, bungee jumping, and luging nearby.

  • Arrowtown: A charming gold rush village, set beside the Arrow River, surrounded by mountains. Wander along Buckingham Street for shops, galleries and cafés; explore the historic Chinese Settlement and Lakes District Museum; or stretch your legs along the easy riverside trail. For something more energetic, climb Tobin’s Track for views across the basin.

  • Gibbston Valley (10–15 mins): Gibbston is the closest of Central Otago’s wine-growing areas and an excellent place to spend a long lunch. Visit a few cellar doors, tour Chard Farm, or hire bikes and follow the Gibbston River Trail between vineyards, the Kawarau River and the surrounding hills. We strongly recommend arranging a shuttle or driver if you plan to taste enthusiastically.

  • Queenstown (20–25 mins): Queenstown offers everything from gentle sightseeing to activities involving helmets and waivers. Walk through Queenstown Gardens and along the lakefront, take the gondola up for panoramic views, or cruise Lake Whakatipu aboard the historic TSS Earnslaw. It is also the place for jet boats, bungy jumping, excellent restaurants and a lively evening out.

  • Further afield: Bannockburn and Cromwell (40 mins – great wine), Wanaka (1 hr – more relaxed Queenstown), Cardrona (30 mins – hamlet with historic hotel on a stunning road crossing the Crown Range), Glenorchy (1 hr – historic town at the northern end of a breathtaking drive hugging the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu), Kinloch (1.5 hrs - quaint inn, gorgeous scenery, hiking, the Dart river)

  • Good to know: Otago summers have long days (light until ~9 PM), warm afternoons, and cool alpine evenings. Pack layers and strong sunscreen. Rental cars are highly recommended for adventuring, but make sure to book early.

Things to do

Exploring Fiordland

Fiordland is New Zealand at its wildest: enormous lakes, temperate rainforest, waterfalls, mountains and deep fiords carved into the southwest corner of the South Island. This is less a place for hopping between towns and more a place to choose one or two big adventures — hike part of a Great Walk, kayak beneath sheer cliffs, take a boat deep into the wilderness, or see the whole improbable landscape from the air. And don’t be discouraged by a little rain — in Fiordland, it mostly means more waterfalls.

  • Te Anau (about 2½ hrs): The gateway to Fiordland and the best base for exploring it. Set on the shore of enormous Lake Te Anau, the town is small, relaxed and ringed by mountains. Walk or cycle the lakefront, visit the bird sanctuary to see takahē, take a boat to the glowworm caves, or walk a section of the Kepler Track. There are also lake cruises, kayaking and scenic flights, and enough restaurants and accommodation to make this the easiest place to settle in for a couple of nights.

  • Milford Sound / Piopiotahi (2–3 hrs from Te Anau): The drive is nearly as spectacular as Milford itself, passing through huge glacial valleys, beech forest, mirror lakes and the Homer Tunnel before dropping sharply toward the sea. Once there, take a cruise or kayak beneath Mitre Peak and towering waterfalls. It is only 120 km, but allow around three hours each way if you want to stop and enjoy it — or take a coach from Te Anau and let someone else concentrate on the Milford Road.

  • Manapouri & Doubtful Sound / Patea (20 mins from Te Anau): Manapouri is a tiny, peaceful settlement on one of New Zealand’s most beautiful lakes and the jumping-off point for Doubtful Sound. Reaching the fiord is an adventure in itself: a boat across Lake Manapouri, a coach over remote Wilmot Pass, then another boat into the sound. It takes a full day, but rewards the effort with a far quieter, more remote experience than Milford. If you have the time, an overnight cruise is an extraordinary way to see it.

  • Further afield: Fiordland has some of the best hiking in New Zealand. The Milford, Kepler and Routeburn Tracks are multi-day adventures, but you don’t need to commit to the whole thing — Key Summit, sections of the Kepler Track and Lake Marian all make excellent day walks. Scenic flights from Te Anau or Manapouri are another spectacular option if your preferred method of wilderness exploration involves considerably less walking.

  • Good to know: Fiordland is famously wet and the weather can change extremely quickly. Bring a waterproof layer, sunscreen and insect repellent — the sandflies are enthusiastic. There is no cellphone coverage along the Milford Road, distances take longer than they look on a map, and cruises and accommodation can book up well ahead in summer. If you’re driving to Milford, fill up in Te Anau, leave plenty of time and enjoy the journey rather than rushing it.
